The competition is open to cellist aged 30 and under on 27th March 2009.

Finals Gala with Christchurch Symphony Orchestra – 3 April 2009
Application process:
For the pre selection process prospective competitors are required to send a DVD or video recording of
SCHUMANN – Adago and Allegro
POPPER – Elfentanz
In addition to the DVD/ video prospective competitors must provide the following information in the format requested.

2. Video cassette or DVD with required pre selection pieces.
3. Copy of birth certificate or passport
4. Documentation of musical education (diploma)
5. Teachers letter of recommendation (for those still studying)
6. 1 passport sized head and shoulder photograph

Selection Process:
20-25 competitors will be selected by Professor Ivashkin to come to New Zealand and participate in the competition.
Successful applications will be notified by email no later than 30 November 2008
Following is the competition repertoire:
Competition Round One:
BACH – Allemande, Courante and Gigue from one of the following solo Suites: BWV 1009, 1010, 1011, 1012 no repeats
HAYDN – Concerto in D or Concerto in C, 1st movement only, with a Cadenza
One of the following works:
DUTILLEUX - 3 Strophes sur le nom de Paul Sacher
LIGETI – Sonata for Solo Cello
XENAKIS– Kottos for Solo Cello
SCHNITTKE - Improvisation for Solo Cello
CRUMB - Sonata for Solo Cello
VASKS – Book for cello
ROSTROPOVICH – Humoresque - download cello part, full score available from Hans Sikoski Publishers, Hamburg (www.sikorski.de)
Competition Round Two:
BEETHOVEN - Sonata op 102 No 1 or Sonata op 102 No 2
One of the following Sonatas: RAKHMANINOV, MIASKOVSKY No 2, PROKOFIEV, SCHNITTKE NO 1
New piece by winner of Young Composers Competition.
Final round:
One of the following Concertos:
ELGAR, DVORAK, SCHUMANN, PROKOFIEV ( Sinfonia-Concertante),
SHOSTAKOVICH No 1
All works should be played from memory, except for :
- Twentieth-century piece for solo cello in Round 1
- Piece by New Zealand composer in Round 2
- Sonatas in Round 2
Travel and Accommodation:
Successful competitors are required to fund their own airfares. The festival will arrange for competitors to be billeted with local families free of charge or if required we can coordinate alternative accommodation at cost.
Many of our host families have hosted competitors before and are located within ten to fifteen minutes from The Arts Centre and the centre of Christchurch. These families play a hugely important part in the competitors’ experience and impression of the competition, Christchurch and New Zealand as a whole with many international friendships forged since the festival began in 1995.
Festival Programme: The full festival programme, which includes recitals by members of the international jury, master classes, workshops, conversazione and social events will be posted on the website as they are confirmed.
